The Polish Pilots of the Battle of Britain · 6:49 · Video: Imperial War Museums · Watch at the source

In short: During the Battle of Britain, Polish pilots formed the largest foreign contingent defending the country against the Luftwaffe. Despite language barriers and unfamiliar aircraft, these servicemen achieved legendary status for their combat performance, with 303 Squadron emerging as the most successful unit of the entire conflict.

Following the invasion of Poland in September 1939, thousands of Polish personnel made their way to France and eventually Britain to persist in the war effort. Although they only joined the aerial defense in late August 1940, their impact was immediate and profound.

A total of 146 Polish pilots flew with the Royal Air Force across various units, including two dedicated Polish squadrons. Collectively, they were responsible for over 200 enemy kills. Notably, 303 Squadron alone claimed at least 126 German aircraft, cementing their reputation as the top-scoring unit during the battle.
