The 50-year quest to decipher the ancient symbols of Crete
In short: In the early 1900s, archaeologists discovered thousands of tablets inscribed with a script that defied explanation. This video explores the decades-long struggle to decode Linear B and the theories that failed to solve its mystery.
After Sir Arthur Evans uncovered nearly 3,000 tablets on the island of Crete in the early 1900s, scholars spent nearly 50 years attempting to understand the script, known as Linear B. While Evans believed the symbols represented the Minoan language, other researchers proposed it might be an early form of Basque or even the lost language of the Etruscans.
