Rare amateur footage captures the stark reality of life in divided 1960s Berlin

The Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall: Unseen Footage of Family Life · 3:21 · Video: Imperial War Museums · Watch at the source

In short: Imperial War Museums has acquired unique home movies from an American service family stationed in West Berlin. This footage offers an intimate, ground-level perspective on the city's transformation during the construction of the Berlin Wall, contrasting daily life with the geopolitical tension of the era.

The collection provides a rare, non-official view of Berlin in the 1960s. Beyond the construction of the wall itself, the footage documents the family's experiences, including visits to iconic landmarks and Hitler’s former residence, The Eagle’s Nest. It captures the mundane alongside the profound, illustrating the immediate impact of the border on those living in its shadow.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the wall's fall in 2019, the museum also commissioned new works from street artists STIK and Thierry Noir. These pieces, painted directly onto original segments of the wall, highlight the enduring symbolic relationship between the barrier and the urban art that eventually defined its legacy.
