The man who taught millions to paint was a military veteran

The Surprisingly Mysterious Life of Famed Artist Bob Ross · 11:39 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: Bob Ross is the ultimate icon of calm, but his journey to the canvas wasn't a straight line. Before he was creating happy little trees for millions, he was a carpenter and a soldier. Discover how a military stint in Alaska shaped the most soothing face in television history.

Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1942, Bob Ross lived a life that predated his television fame by decades. Before becoming a household name, he worked as a carpenter alongside his father and spent a year in high school. His path to art was unconventional; he enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 18, a move that would eventually place him in the rugged landscapes of Alaska.

Ross attended a United Service Organizations club to study painting for the first time while serving in the military during the early 1960s. While he was already painting prolifically and selling Alaskan landscape works to tourists, he hadn't yet mastered the signature style that would define his career. That breakthrough came later, through the television medium itself. He studied under Bill Alexander, whose show 'The Magic of Oil Painting' taught the wet-on-wet (alla prima) technique.

This specific method—applying wet oil paint over still-wet layers—was the engine of Ross's success. It allowed him to complete complex compositions quickly, making it perfect for the 30-minute television format. After retiring from the military in 1981, Ross sought private lessons with Alexander before eventually taking over his spot on PBS. From 1983 to 1994, Ross transformed the medium into a personal, intimate experience, using his signature afro and folksy encouragement to turn painting into a meditative practice for the masses.

Despite his universal respect today, many viewers are surprised to learn that his 'hippie' persona was a deliberate television craft built upon a foundation of military discipline and a mastery of technical shortcuts that allowed for effortless, real-time creation.
