The man who revolutionized photography ended his life by rewriting his will
In short: George Eastman transformed photography from a cumbersome science into a global hobby. Yet, after building an empire of innovation and unprecedented philanthropy, the founder of Kodak chose a sudden, tragic end, leaving behind a massive fortune and a legacy of generosity to the city of Rochester.
Born in 1854, George Eastman’s path to industrial titan was forged through early hardship. After losing his father at age eight and his sister to polio, Eastman left school at 14 to support his family, working as an office boy and later as a bookkeeper at the Rochester Savings Bank. His entry into photography was accidental; a planned trip to Hispaniola in 1877 prompted him to purchase heavy, expensive equipment, a purchase that sparked a lifelong obsession with making the medium more accessible.
Eastman’s true genius lay in simplifying the complex. By collaborating with inventor William Hall Walker, he developed the Eastman-Walker Roll Holder in 1884, which replaced individual plates with roll film. This technology underpinned the first Kodak camera, launched in 1888. He further revolutionized the industry by hiring chemist Henry Reichenbach, who in 1889 perfected a transparent, flexible film. This innovation was so significant it was even adapted by Thomas Edison for early motion-picture cameras.
Beyond the laboratory, Eastman was a pioneer of corporate social responsibility. He implemented employee profit-sharing and stock options as early as 1919. His philanthropy was equally vast, including a $2 million endowment to the University of Rochester and support for the Rochester Institute of Technology. However, his life ended abruptly in 1932 when he committed suicide. On March 14, 1932, just before his death, he gathered friends to rewrite his will, ensuring his mansion and significant funds would benefit Rochester’s dental care and educational institutions.
