Can Brazil transform from a deforestation hotspot into a global nature superpower?
In short: Ilona Szabó de Carvalho explores how Brazil is shifting its economic model from extraction to regeneration. By leveraging advanced forest mapping and ambitious restoration goals, the country aims to dismantle a massive illegal environmental crime economy and prove that protecting nature can be profitable.
Over the past 40 years, Brazil has experienced deforestation on a scale exceeding the size of California. Research indicates that approximately 90 percent of this clearing is illegal, fueling a global environmental crime economy worth billions of dollars. Civic entrepreneur Ilona Szabó de Carvalho argues that this crisis presents a unique opportunity for systemic change.
Presented at the TED Countdown Summit on June 16, 2025, the talk highlights how Brazil is pioneering new economic frameworks. These innovations focus on forest mapping and restoration, aiming to establish a model where the economy thrives by preserving ecosystems rather than exploiting them.
