In short: Often called divine magic, theurgy is a practice designed to bridge the gap between the mortal soul and the transcendent One. By employing specific prayers, symbols, and ritualized actions, practitioners aim to ascend the scale of creation, ultimately achieving a state of union with the divine known as henosis.

Originating in the mid-second-century Chaldean Oracles, theurgy emerged from late Neoplatonist philosophy. While early thinkers like Plotinus viewed the process as a form of meditative contemplation, later figures like Iamblichus transformed it into a rigorous, ritual-centered system. Iamblichus argued that because the divine is supra-rational, it cannot be reached through mental effort alone. Instead, the theurgist must engage in a 'ritualized cosmogony'—a reenactment of the divine creative process—using physical symbols and invocations to retrace the divine signatures back to their source.

The core of this practice rests on the Neoplatonic view of the universe as a series of emanations from the One, which includes the Divine Mind and the World Soul. The theurgist works by the principle of 'like with like,' starting with material correspondences and moving toward purely spiritual operations. This path is intended to liberate the soul, allowing it to participate in the restoration of cosmic order. For the Emperor Julian, who reigned from 332 to 363, this meant a devotion to ritual sacrifice and prayer, which he championed as a pagan alternative to Christianity.

In later centuries, theurgy evolved through various esoteric traditions, including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and certain branches of Esoteric Christianity. These modern interpretations often emphasize the analysis of individual consciousness to achieve spiritual grace. Meanwhile, contemporary thinkers like John Milbank have recontextualized theurgy, suggesting it can serve as a framework for social harmony and the liberation of nature. Despite these shifts in application, the fundamental goal remains consistent: the transformation of the practitioner through a deliberate, structured engagement with the divine.
