In short: Founded in the early 1900s by occultist Aleister Crowley, Thelema is a philosophy emphasizing individual freedom and the pursuit of a divine calling known as the True Will. It draws from ancient Egyptian cosmology and the concept that every person is a star, moving along their own independent, celestial path.

At the heart of Thelema lies The Book of the Law, a foundational text Aleister Crowley claimed was dictated to him in 1904 by a non-corporeal entity called Aiwass. The system is defined by two primary axioms: the mandate to act according to one's True Will and the principle that love is the governing force when directed by that will. Unlike common hedonism, True Will represents an individual's essential purpose, a calling that transcends ordinary ego-driven desires.

Thelemic cosmology is heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian deities. Nuit, the night sky, represents the infinite source of all possibilities, while her consort Hadit symbolizes the infinitely small point of manifestation and motion. Ra-Hoor-Khuit, a form of Horus, embodies the active energy of Thelemic magick. Practitioners use rituals, meditation, and yoga to achieve self-mastery and align their actions with their True Will, viewing the process as a form of Great Work.

While the term thelema is derived from the Greek word for will, its modern usage is distinct from earlier historical references. Writers like François Rabelais used the term in 16th-century fiction to describe a utopian abbey governed by individual freedom, and Sir Francis Dashwood later adopted similar motifs for his 18th-century Hellfire Club. However, modern Thelemites emphasize that their tradition is specifically rooted in Crowley's 20th-century revelations rather than these earlier literary or social experiments.

Today, Thelema persists through organizations like the Ordo Templi Orientis and independent practitioners. Though the movement remains a niche part of the Western esoteric tradition, its influence has expanded through new interpretations by figures such as Jack Parsons and Kenneth Grant. Estimates from 2020 suggest there are between 5,000 and 10,000 Thelemites worldwide, continuing a tradition that seeks to harmonize individual autonomy with a broader universal order.
