In short: Tomi Adeyemi defied expectations to create the Legacy of Orïsha, a blockbuster fantasy trilogy. From a breakthrough debut that secured a seven-figure deal to a complex journey through Hollywood film adaptations, Adeyemi has navigated the pressures of first-generation success while centering Black protagonists in the world of young adult fiction.

Born in 1993 to Nigerian parents, Adeyemi grew up in Chicago without deep exposure to her Yoruba heritage. It was only after graduating from Harvard and studying West African mythology in Brazil that she found the inspiration for her debut novel, Children of Blood and Bone. The book, which follows Zélie Adebola’s fight to restore magic to her people, was designed as a deliberate counter-narrative to traditional fantasy, ensuring young Black girls could see themselves as heroes.

The novel’s release in 2018 was a landmark event, debuting at number one on The New York Times bestseller list and securing a massive seven-figure deal for publishing and film rights. Yet, this success brought intense scrutiny. Adeyemi faced challenges ranging from a public plagiarism accusation—which she later retracted—to the grueling demands of maintaining a rapid publishing schedule for her sequels, Children of Virtue and Vengeance and the final installment, Children of Anguish and Anarchy.

Her relationship with Hollywood has been equally turbulent. After an initial deal with Fox 2000, the project moved to Lucasfilm and 20th Century Studios, only for those rights to lapse in 2021 due to creative friction. Paramount Pictures later acquired the rights, with Adeyemi serving as both scriptwriter and executive producer. Despite this involvement, by 2026, Adeyemi publicly distanced herself from the production, describing the experience as deeply painful and separating her name from the project.

Beyond her novels, Adeyemi has expanded her influence through creative writing coaching and work in animation. Whether modeling for her own book covers or teaching others through her platform, The Writer's Roadmap, she remains a singular figure in modern literature. Her career reflects the complexities of balancing cultural identity, creative ownership, and the immense pressures of rapid, high-stakes commercial success.
