Are the vibrant colors of our neighboring planets actually what we would see?
In short: Planetary geologist Jim Zimbelman examines selected photographs from a specialized exhibition that blends scientific data with artistic interpretation. This exploration reveals the complex and varied terrains across our solar neighborhood, challenging common perceptions of how these distant worlds appear to the human eye.
The exhibition, titled Beyond: Visions of Our Solar System, features the work of artist Michael Benson. Hosted at the National Air and Space Museum, the collection integrates photography, artistic vision, and planetary science to showcase the diverse geography of our solar system.
Jim Zimbelman, a researcher at the museum's Center for Earth and Planetary Studies, highlights specific pieces from the display to discuss the intersection of exploration and imagery. The exhibition remained open to the public until May 2, 2011.
