In short: The University of Illinois Springfield sits on 740 acres of prairie land that once belonged to a prosperous 1841 saddler. Today, this historic site serves as a major hub for academic innovation, balancing its deep roots in Illinois history with a modern mission of experiential learning and global outreach.

The university's origins are tied to the Illinois General Assembly's 1967 decision to create a Board of Regents to operate three institutions, including an unnamed one in Springfield. This led to the official creation of Sangamon State University in 1969. Originally, it was an "upper-division" institution, meaning it only offered the final two years of undergraduate education and graduate work. It began classes in 1970 at the former Hotel Leland before moving to its current campus near Lake Springfield.

A major structural shift occurred on July 1, 1995, when Governor Jim Edgar signed a bill merging Sangamon State with the University of Illinois System. While it became the University of Illinois Springfield that year, it did not immediately become a full four-year university. That transition was finalized on September 8, 2005, when the Board of Trustees approved a new general education curriculum, allowing the school to admit freshmen under that framework starting in fall 2006.

The campus design reflects a specific 1970–1971 master plan for an "urban campus." This plan envisioned a pedestrian-friendly layout surrounded by restored prairie, with all permanent buildings located within a "ring road" known as University Drive. The campus still preserves its history, including the Thomas Strawbridge homestead, constructed around 1845 by a local harness maker, which was restored in 2012.
