In short: Founded in 1857, Illinois State University began with a single focus: training teachers. Today, it has evolved into a high-activity research institution, climbing national rankings and expanding its academic reach through massive campus investments and diverse degree offerings.

Originally established as Illinois State Normal University, the institution was designed to be a wide-ranging university from its inception, despite initially functioning primarily as a 'normal college' for teacher training. Its early classes were held in downtown Bloomington, moving to the current campus in North Bloomington after the completion of Old Main in 1860. The town of Normal, which was chartered in 1865, actually took its name from the university.

The university's evolution has been marked by significant growth in both scale and prestige. During the 2026 academic year, 5,594 degrees were granted by the university, comprising 4,775 bachelor's, 737 master's, and 82 doctoral qualifications. Significant funding drives this scholarly growth; upwards of $373 million has been spent on building facilities throughout the previous three years.

Recent momentum is evident in national recognition. According to President Aondover Tarhule's 2026 State of the University Address, the university has seen significant gains in U.S. News & World Report rankings, moving up six positions in the Top Public Schools category and three positions in the Best National Universities category. These gains coincide with improvements in student success metrics, such as a 2.8 percentage point increase in the six-year graduation rate, which now stands at 67.3%.

Today, the university is classified as an R2: Doctoral University with high research activity. It offers over 200 academic degree programs across seven colleges and competes in NCAA Division I as the Redbirds.
