In short: Founded in 1892, the University of Reading evolved from a local extension college into a major research institution. It holds the distinction of being the only university in the United Kingdom to receive a royal charter between the two world wars, setting the stage for its modern global academic footprint.

The University of Reading traces its roots to the Schools of Art and Science established in 1860 and 1870. In 1892, these were transferred to the newly formed University Extension College, Reading, an extension of Christ Church, Oxford. Under the leadership of its first president, Sir Halford John Mackinder, the college grew rapidly. By 1926, it secured a royal charter from King George V, granting it the power to award its own degrees. This milestone made it the only new university created in Britain during the interwar period, marking a significant departure from its humble beginnings behind the Reading Town Hall.

Today, the university operates across four major campuses, including its principal site at Whiteknights Park, which was purchased in 1947. The institution has expanded its reach internationally, opening its first overseas campus in Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia, in 2016. Its academic structure has undergone several reorganizations, most notably in 2009 when it consolidated its schools into three faculties: Science, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and the Henley Business School. The latter, formed through a 2008 merger with Henley Management College, is a selective, triple-accredited institution that exemplifies the university's focus on professional and enterprise-led education.

Despite its prestige, the university has navigated significant challenges. In 2019, it faced a financial and governance crisis involving a £121 million loan from a charitable trust, contributing to a total debt of £300 million. Furthermore, the institution has faced internal and public scrutiny over departmental closures and controversial policy shifts, such as its 2025 decision regarding gendered facilities. Nevertheless, Reading maintains a strong research profile, particularly in meteorology and atmospheric science, where it consistently ranks among the top global institutions. Its commitment to research is underscored by five Queen's Anniversary Prizes, recognizing contributions ranging from Shakespearean studies to climate change modeling.
