In short: In Hindu tradition, Vayu is far more than the god of wind. As the divine messenger and the vital life force known as Prana, he is the invisible power that keeps the gods functioning and the breath of life flowing through every living being on earth.

Vayu, also known as Vata or Pavana, holds a central role in Hindu cosmology as both a physical element and a divine entity. Beyond his status as a directional guardian of the northwest, he is revered as the 'life breath of the world.' His significance is illustrated in the Upanishads, where he is depicted as the essential force behind all bodily functions. In one metaphorical contest, various deities representing senses like vision attempted to leave the body; the human continued to live, albeit impaired. However, when Vayu—as Mukhya Prana—began to depart, he forcibly pulled the other deities from their posts, proving that all other functions rely entirely on his presence.

The mythology surrounding Vayu is deeply intertwined with the preservation of dharma. According to the tradition of the 13th-century saint Madhva, Vayu accompanies Vishnu during his incarnations to aid in this cosmic preservation. This lineage of avatars includes Hanuman, the devoted monkey god of the Ramayana; Bhima, the powerful Pandava warrior of the Mahabharata; and Madhvacharya himself. While Madhva cited Vedic verses to support his identity as the third avatar of Vayu, modern scholars like Roque Mesquita have noted that the textual basis for some of these claims remains a subject of academic debate.

Vayu's influence extends well beyond India, appearing in East Asian Buddhist traditions as a protective deity. In Japan, he is known as Fūten and serves as one of the Twelve Devas, while in Chinese Buddhism, he is classified as Fengtian among the Twenty-Four Protective Deities. Whether as a chariot-driving warrior in the Rigveda or the silent, animating force of the breath, Vayu remains a bridge between the physical atmosphere and the metaphysical essence of life, serving as the ultimate authority on the vital energy that sustains existence.
