Why does the government sometimes owe you money and sometimes demand it?
In short: This video explains the simple mechanism behind tax refunds and bills. It clarifies how the federal income tax withheld from your paycheck by your employer determines whether you receive a refund or owe a balance at the end of the year.
Your tax outcome is essentially a reconciliation process. Throughout the year, your employer deducts federal income tax from your earnings, which is documented on your W-2 form. When you file your taxes, the government compares this withheld amount against your actual tax liability.
If your employer withheld more than your total tax obligation, you are entitled to a refund of the excess. Conversely, if the amount withheld was insufficient to cover your total tax burden, you are required to pay the remaining difference.
