How do you design a boat to safely shatter the world water speed record?
In short: The ThrustWSH project aims to break the world water speed record, a pursuit with a sobering 50 percent fatality rate. By applying aeronautical engineering principles and super-cavitating hydrofoils, the team is attempting to move beyond traditional boat design to create a craft that flies on water rather than through it.
The World Water Speed Record is notoriously perilous. Since Ken Warby set the current record of 317.596 mph in 1978, two subsequent challengers have died. With a historical fatality rate nearing 50 percent for the 14 teams that have attempted the record, the ThrustWSH project—led by Chief Engineer Andrew Bradley—prioritizes rigorous data gathering, physical modelling, and risk mitigation over rapid construction.
The design philosophy centers on the use of super-cavitating hydrofoils. While standard boats must part the water, the ThrustWSH is engineered to rise up and skid across the surface. This technology shares similarities with supersonic aircraft wings, though supercavitation in water occurs at 65-70 mph, whereas supersonic flight in air requires speeds exceeding 700 mph. By mimicking the flight dynamics of an aeroplane, the team hopes to achieve stability and safety at extreme velocities.
Engineering the craft requires balancing complex physics with practical mathematics. The team must carefully position components to ensure the center of gravity is perfectly placed for control, while also calculating fuel storage and pipe dimensions. This process involves a diverse team of experts, including aeronautical engineers and electronics specialists, who use both advanced modelling and simple, fundamental equations to solve structural challenges. The project draws inspiration from the legacy of John Cobb and Reid Railton, aiming to modernize the concept of a high-speed jet boat for a new era of record-breaking.
