Why truth is the essential lifeblood for maintaining a functional democracy
In short: Vjosa Osmani Sadriu, who leads the Republic of Kosovo, discusses the fragility of democratic systems. Drawing from her personal history as a survivor of conflict, she explains why protecting objective reality is the most critical task for modern leaders.
In this conversation recorded on April 14, 2026, at TED2026, the sixth president of Kosovo reflects on her transition from a child seeking liberation to a head of state shaping policy. She argues that democracy cannot survive without truth acting as its primary source of oxygen.
The discussion, moderated by journalist Angus Hervey, examines the global challenges facing democratic governance. By sharing her experiences in high-level political negotiations, she highlights the necessity of remembering one's origins while navigating the complexities of defending freedom in an era where facts are increasingly contested.
