David Bowie’s striking eyes were a trick of physics, not genetics
In short: For decades, fans assumed David Bowie possessed heterochromia—naturally different colored eyes. In reality, his iconic look was the result of a physical injury that permanently altered how his pupils reacted to light. It is a masterclass in how a singular accident can become a permanent aesthetic hallmark.
While many people believe Bowie had one brown eye and one blue eye, he did not actually have two differently colored irises. Instead, his appearance was defined by anisocoria: a condition where the pupils are unequal in size. Bowie's left pupil stayed constantly enlarged, so it stopped reacting to light by shrinking as usual. Because a larger pupil reveals more of the black center against the iris, his left eye appeared significantly darker than his right. This condition is distinct from heterochromia, which involves actual iris color variation. The visual difference was purely a result of light interaction with the eye's anatomy.
The origin of this condition dates back to 1962, when Bowie was just 15 years old. Reports from George Underwood and Bowie suggest that a dispute involving a girl led to their scuffle. Underwood punched Bowie in the left eye, causing serious damage to the muscles that control the iris. This injury resulted in the permanent dilation of that pupil, creating an optical effect that became a staple of his public persona. Despite the violence of the encounter, Underwood and Bowie maintained their friendship for years. Underwood eventually transitioned into a career as an artist and graphic designer.
This physiological quirk had practical implications for his photography as well. Because a dilated pupil allows more light to enter and reflect off the blood vessels at the back of the eye, Bowie was more susceptible to the 'red-eye' effect in photos. This is notably visible in the famous 1973 image taken by Brian Duffy for the Aladdin Sane series. Ultimately, what began as a teenage altercation transformed into one of the most recognizable visual signatures in music history. The unique appearance was showcased across various promotional materials throughout his long career. This included album artwork and numerous other types of professional photography.
