How Herodotus transformed simple lists into the art of historical inquiry

Why is Herodotus called “The Father of History”? - Mark Robinson · 5:03 · Video: TED-Ed · Watch at the source

In short: Before the fifth century BC, history was merely a sequence of events attributed to divine will. This video explores how Herodotus revolutionized this approach by investigating the underlying causes of human events through multiple perspectives.

For 2,500 years, the recording of the past lacked depth, often functioning as a basic list of occurrences. Herodotus changed this paradigm by seeking a deeper understanding of why things happened.

Rather than simply accepting events as the will of the gods, he adopted a method of examining events from both sides to uncover their true reasons. This shift in methodology is why he is widely recognized as the Father of History.
