Could eating insects be the secret to feeding a planet of ten billion people?

In short: While Western cultures often view insects as pests, two billion people already rely on them for nourishment. As the global population climbs toward 10.3 billion by the 2080s, scientists suggest that shifting toward entomophagy could provide a sustainable, protein-rich solution to our looming food and climate crises.

Entomophagy, the practice of consuming insects, arachnids, and centipedes, is far from a modern fad. It has been documented for thousands of years, appearing in ancient Greek and Roman texts and even the Bible. Despite this long history, many Western nations remain skeptical. However, as Earth's population is projected to grow from 8.2 billion to roughly 10.3 billion by the 2080s, the search for sustainable protein has brought insect consumption into the spotlight.

Nutritionally, insects are highly competitive with traditional meat. For instance, a 100-gram portion of crickets can contain up to 69 grams of protein. They are also rich in essential vitamins like iron and zinc, as well as Omega-3 fatty acids, while remaining relatively low in fat. Experts like Dr. Duncan Sivell of the Natural History Museum argue that insects offer a viable, nutrient-dense alternative to conventional livestock, which currently places an immense strain on global resources.

The environmental argument for insect farming is equally compelling. The livestock industry currently utilizes approximately 70% of the planet's agricultural land, with about 33% of all croplands dedicated solely to feeding animals. In contrast, insect cultivation requires significantly less space and feed, while generating fewer greenhouse gases. Because rearing insects is far more efficient than traditional livestock systems, many researchers believe that integrating them into our diets is not just a culinary experiment, but an economic and ecological necessity for the future.
