Why a lack of expertise is often an advantage in innovation

You don't have to be an expert to solve big problems | Tapiwa Chiwewe · 8:38 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: You don't need to be a specialist to tackle global crises. This talk explores how curiosity and a fresh perspective can drive meaningful action when traditional expertise feels out of reach.

After noticing severe air pollution in Johannesburg, Tapiwa Chiwewe moved from concerned observer to innovator. Despite not being an environmental expert, his research revealed that household and ambient air pollution accounted for nearly 14 percent of global deaths in 2012.

Chiwewe and his colleagues subsequently built a platform to identify pollution trends, providing city planners with the data needed for better decision-making. The core message is that bold action combined with new skill sets can create remarkable conditions for change, even without formal credentials.
