Why chasing a fleeting shadow is worth a lifetime of travel

You owe it to yourself to experience a total solar eclipse | David Baron · 12:17 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: For most, a solar eclipse is a rare astronomical event. For David Baron, it is a lifelong pursuit. Discover why this journalist and 'umbraphile' spends decades tracking the moon's shadow across the globe for just a few minutes of awe.

The phenomenon of a total solar eclipse is often described as one of nature's most awe-inspiring spectacles. As the moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, its shadow races across the landscape—most recently moving from Mexico to Canada and across the United States from Texas to Maine on April 8, 2024. For those lucky enough to be in the path of totality, the primary reward is the sighting of the solar corona.

A scholar in residence at the University of Colorado's Centre for Environmental Journalism, journalist David Baron has devoted much of his career to this endeavour. An 'umbraphile' by passion, Baron's obsession began in 1998 when he witnessed his first total eclipse. Since then, he has spent roughly 20 years traveling the world to capture these brief moments of wonder and joy.

Beyond the celestial mechanics, Baron's work explores the profound emotional impact of such events. His career in public radio—including roles as a science reporter for NPR, WBRU, and PRI's The World—has been marked by significant recognition, such as the Lowell Thomas Award and multiple prizes from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His 2017 book, 'American Eclipse', further documents the intersection of science and human experience.

While the window of totality is incredibly brief, the pursuit of the shadow offers a unique perspective on the natural world. For Baron, the decades of travel and the fleeting minutes of darkness are a necessary trade-off for experiencing the sublime beauty of the sun's outer atmosphere.
