A brilliant strategist who conquered a kingdom, only to lose everything in a mutiny.
In short: Zhong Hui was a prodigy of the Three Kingdoms era, rising from an elite family to become a master tactician for the state of Wei. After orchestrating the successful conquest of Shu Han, his ambition spiraled into a desperate, failed rebellion that ended in his violent death at age 40.
Born in 225, Zhong Hui was the son of the Grand Tutor Zhong Yao. From a young age, he was celebrated for his intelligence and wide-ranging expertise in arts and literature. By the 250s, he had become a trusted aide to the Wei regent Sima Zhao, proving his worth through strategic contributions during the suppression of rebellions in Shouchun. His rise was meteoric, marked by his ability to navigate the treacherous political landscape of the Wei court.
In 263, Zhong Hui was tasked with leading a massive invasion of the rival state Shu Han. He demonstrated ruthless efficiency, framing fellow commanders like Deng Ai and Zhuge Xu for treason to consolidate total military control. Following the surrender of the Shu emperor Liu Shan, Zhong Hui found himself at the peak of his power. However, his megalomania took hold, and he began plotting to overthrow Sima Zhao. He attempted to manipulate the political climate by forging documents and fabricating imperial decrees, but his paranoia ultimately became his undoing.
The end came swiftly in 264. After Zhong Hui detained high-ranking officers to force their compliance in his revolt, a rumor of a planned purge sparked a mutiny. As chaos erupted in Chengdu, Zhong Hui and his ally Jiang Wei were overwhelmed and killed by their own soldiers. Sima Zhao had essentially predicted this outcome, noting that Zhong Hui’s troops were too exhausted and the local population too fearful to sustain a rebellion. Zhong Hui’s life, which began with such promise, concluded in a chaotic power struggle that left hundreds dead.
