How a former rapper and housing counselor became New York City's first Muslim mayor.
In short: Zohran Mamdani’s rise from a little-known state assembly member to the mayor of New York City in 2025 stunned the political establishment. By defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo, the democratic socialist turned the city’s political landscape on its head, championing affordability and progressive policies that have already earned him kingmaker status.
Born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991 to filmmaker Mira Nair and anthropologist Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran Mamdani moved to New York City at age seven. His upbringing was shaped by his parents' global academic and artistic careers, but his own political identity was forged through grassroots organizing. Before his mayoral run, he worked as a foreclosure prevention counselor in Queens, an experience that grounded his later legislative focus on economic inequality and housing stability.
Mamdani’s political career began in 2020 when he won a seat in the New York State Assembly. His tenure was marked by unconventional tactics, including a 15-day hunger strike in 2021 to protest predatory loans targeting taxi drivers, which ultimately helped secure $450 million in debt relief. These experiences informed his 2025 mayoral platform, which centered on freezing rents for stabilized apartments, implementing fare-free public buses, and establishing city-owned grocery stores to combat local food insecurity.
His victory in 2025 was a major upset against the Democratic establishment. Once in office, Mamdani demonstrated his influence by endorsing progressive candidates in 2026 House of Representatives primaries. When all three of his endorsed candidates won, The New York Times labeled him a 'kingmaker,' a title that highlights his unique ability to mobilize voters around democratic socialist ideals. His administration continues to be defined by this focus on material change, aiming to address the high cost of living that he identified as the primary concern for city residents.
