The sequel that wasn't supposed to exist
In short: Imagine a film so poorly received that the original author denounced it, and the lead actress later begged fans to stop the franchise. This wasn't a natural evolution of a masterpiece; it was a desperate studio pivot that turned a standalone script into a
In 2001, Lionsgate noticed the critical and commercial success of the 2000 film American Psycho. To capitalize on the brand, they took an unrelated screenplay titled The Girl Who Wouldn't Die and modified it to create a tenuous connection to the original. The original script had no initial ties to the first movie. Production began before the studio decided to force the connection.
The resulting film, American Psycho 2 (or All American Girl), was released direct-to-video on June 18, 2002. It was met with harsh criticism, earning a 3.3/10 average rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics described it as a "lackluster" shift from clever satire to "shallow slasher tropes." The movie was panned by critics who called it a "stuck pig." It was also described as a "campy chiller" that mocked various academic and psychological concepts.
The production was notable for its internal friction. Author Bret Easton Ellis expressed confusion over the sequel's billing, while lead actress Mila Kunis later expressed public regret for her role, stating she didn't know it would be branded as a sequel during production. The project was launched with a budget of roughly $10 million. Filming took place in Toronto and wrapped by late June 2001.
Despite the backlash, the film remains a curious piece of cinema history. It follows a criminology student who assumes a classmate's identity to infiltrate the FBI, blending elements of dark comedy with a "Scream-styled" slasher aesthetic that continues to spark debate among retrospective viewers. The film's journey from a theatrical goal to a direct-to-video release highlights the era's growing demand for DVDs. It eventually made its Blu-ray debut in 2017, remaining a polarizing example of how studio demands can reshape independent storytelling. The plot features a girl who kills a babysitter in 1988. She later assumes the identity of a student named Elizabeth to enter the FBI academy.
