Boomtown is a sprawling, fictional city built from scratch in the English countryside annually.
In short: Every August, 1,250 acres of Hampshire farmland transform into a complex, immersive metropolis. With eight distinct districts, life-sized street sets, and an overarching narrative, Boomtown is less a standard music festival and more a temporary, theatrical social experiment that challenges the boundaries between performer and spectator.
Founded in 2009 by Christopher Rutherford and Luke Mitchell, Boomtown began as a modest gathering before evolving into a massive, highly produced event on the Matterley Estate. Unlike traditional festivals, it functions as a fictional city, complete with its own newspaper, The Daily Rag, and a narrative that unfolds through an alternate reality game. Attendees engage with actors portraying citizens, exploring themes ranging from artificial intelligence to political corruption, culminating in a grand closing ceremony.
The festival's infrastructure is immense, requiring six weeks to construct and a month to disassemble. It features 12 main stages and over 50 hidden venues tucked away within elaborate street sets. In recent years, the festival has navigated significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced cancellations in 2020 and 2021 and severely impacted the company's equity. Following these financial pressures, the founders sold a 45% stake in 2022 to a consortium involving Live Nation, Gaiety Investments, and SJM Concerts, with further ownership shifts occurring in 2025.
Despite these changes, Boomtown remains a leader in immersive festival design. The 2026 edition, titled Radical Redesign, marked a return to a larger footprint after years of condensed layouts. The event continues to push boundaries, such as the introduction of the Hydro XL stage, a fully hydrogen-powered venue, and the integration of a UK-first academic research hub to study social interaction. By blending diverse musical lineups with a commitment to theatricality and co-production, Boomtown has become a defining example of the modern, professionalized festival scene.
