Beyond the duo: Art Garfunkel’s journey from mathematics teacher to iconic vocal performer
In short: While best known for his legendary partnership with Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel’s life spans far beyond the folk-rock charts. From his early days as a cantor and geometry teacher to his struggles with vocal injury and personal loss, Garfunkel has maintained a career defined by artistic reinvention and resilience.
Born in 1941 in Queens, New York, Garfunkel’s musical foundation was laid early. By age five, he was already captivated by the acoustics of stairwells, and by his 1954 bar mitzvah, he was performing as a hazzan. His academic pursuits were equally rigorous; he earned a bachelor's degree in art history in 1965 and a master's in mathematics education in 1967 from Columbia University. During a hiatus from the music industry in the early 1970s, he briefly taught geometry to high school sophomores at Litchfield Academy in Connecticut.
Garfunkel’s solo career saw significant success, particularly in the United Kingdom, where he scored two number-one hits. His 1979 album, Fate for Breakfast, reached number two on the UK charts, driven by the success of the Mike Batt-penned single 'Bright Eyes'. Despite this, his personal life faced profound challenges, including the 1979 suicide of his girlfriend, Laurie Bird, which left him in a deep depression. His professional life also saw turbulence, marked by a strained relationship with Simon that led to the cancellation of a 2010 tour after Garfunkel suffered vocal cord paresis following a choking incident.
Throughout his career, Garfunkel has been a vocal arranger and a performer of diverse material, ranging from pop standards to his own poetry. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Simon in 1990 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. Even after facing significant vocal difficulties that forced him to step back from touring, his legacy remains anchored in his unique contribution to the sound of the 1960s and his enduring presence in the American musical landscape.
