How three indie singer-songwriters reclaimed the boy genius trope to redefine collaborative music
In short: Boygenius began as a joke between Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, born from shared frustrations with industry sexism. By channeling the overconfident bravado of the archetypal male genius, they created a space for open, collaborative creativity that led to Grammy-winning success and a subversion of competitive norms.
The formation of Boygenius was, in Phoebe Bridgers’ words, an accident. The three artists were already friends and fans of each other’s work, having navigated the indie scene in similar circles. Their collaboration was partly a reaction against the industry's tendency to pit women against one another. By forming the group, they sought to reject the pressure to compete, proving that they could create meaningful art with peers they genuinely admired.
The band’s name is a pointed critique of the 'tortured genius' archetype—a specifically male trope where artists are told from birth that their every thought is brilliant. To counter the self-doubt they had often faced, the trio adopted this persona in the studio. If one member hesitated, the others would encourage them to 'be the boy genius,' treating every idea as inherently worthwhile. This environment, which they intentionally kept free of male influence during their initial recording sessions, allowed them to communicate without the need for constant explanation.
Their debut EP, recorded in just four days in 2018, was followed by their 2023 studio album, The Record. The latter achieved significant commercial success, topping charts in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Despite their rapid ascent and three Grammy wins, the group has remained grounded in their original ethos. Even as they entered an indefinite hiatus in 2024, the members expressed that their bond remains intact, viewing the break as a pause rather than a definitive end to their collaborative efforts.
Beyond their own music, the group has utilized their platform for advocacy and community. They have raised funds for various charitable organizations and used their influence to highlight the work of other artists. Their name, sometimes stylized as 'xboygeniusx' as a tongue-in-cheek nod to straight-edge punk culture, reflects their refusal to take the industry’s rigid labels too seriously, maintaining a sense of humor about their own status as a 'supergroup.'
