How a New York pop rock trio briefly captured the world's attention
In short: Formed in 2008, the band Fun rose from modest beginnings to global stardom with their 2012 anthem We Are Young. Despite their rapid ascent and Grammy-winning success, the group eventually stepped away from the spotlight, leaving behind a legacy defined by theatrical arrangements and an accidental, meteoric rise to fame.
The band emerged in New York City after the dissolution of Nate Ruess's previous project, The Format. Ruess recruited multi-instrumentalists Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff, and the trio began collaborating in New Jersey. Their initial output, including the 2009 debut Aim and Ignite, earned praise for its progressive pop sensibilities, though critics remained divided on the production style, with some finding it overly polished compared to the band's live performances.
The group's trajectory shifted dramatically with their second studio album, Some Nights, released in 2012. The record achieved significant commercial success, reaching the third position on the U.S. Billboard 200 and topping alternative and rock charts. The lead single, We Are Young, featuring Janelle Monáe, became a cultural phenomenon. It secured the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and made history by maintaining over 300,000 weekly downloads for seven consecutive weeks. This success culminated in two Grammy Awards in 2013, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year.
Despite this peak, the band's tenure was relatively short. By 2015, the members announced a hiatus to focus on individual ventures. Jack Antonoff, who later fronted Bleachers, reflected on the band's nature in a 2024 interview, describing the project as having an accidental quality that felt distinct from his own creative identity. While the group never officially disbanded, they ceased active operations, leaving a distinct mark on the pop landscape of the early 2010s.
