In short: Born Gordon Sumner, the man known as Sting rose from a childhood near industrial shipyards to become a genre-defying titan of music. With over 100 million records sold, his career spans the punk-infused energy of the Police to sophisticated solo explorations of jazz, classical, and worldbeat.

Born in 1951 in Wallsend, England, Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner grew up in the shadow of local shipyards. His path to global fame began with a fascination for music, famously learning to play bass by manipulating record speeds to isolate lines. Before his breakthrough, he worked as a bus conductor and tax officer, eventually qualifying as a teacher in 1973. His stage name emerged during his time with the Phoenix Jazzmen, when a bandleader noted his black-and-yellow striped jumper made him resemble a wasp.

In 1977, he formed the Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band became a defining force in rock, producing five UK chart-topping albums and earning multiple Grammy Awards. Sting’s songwriting, including hits like "Every Breath You Take" and "Roxanne," propelled the group to international success. Despite their massive influence, Sting famously decided to leave the band while onstage at Shea Stadium in 1983, feeling he had reached the "Everest" of his career.

His solo career, launched in 1985 with The Dream of the Blue Turtles, showcased his willingness to experiment with diverse musical traditions, from jazz ensembles to Elizabethan lute music. Beyond his commercial success, Sting has been recognized with a CBE, Kennedy Center Honors, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His work often reflects his roots, most notably in his Broadway musical The Last Ship, which dramatizes the decline of the shipbuilding industry that defined his early life in Northumberland.
