A magical remote control turns Adam Sandler’s life into a dark, high-concept moral fable.
In short: In the 2006 film Click, an overworked architect gains a universal remote that controls reality. What begins as a tool to skip life's inconveniences quickly spirals into a cautionary tale about the cost of ambition, proving that fast-forwarding through the mundane often means missing the moments that matter most.
Directed by Frank Coraci and starring Adam Sandler, Click follows Michael Newman, a workaholic architect who discovers a prototype remote capable of manipulating time. Inspired by the folk tale The Magic Thread, the film explores the consequences of auto-piloting through life. As the remote learns Michael's preferences, it begins to skip ahead automatically, forcing him to confront the loss of his family, his health, and his father's final moments while he was distracted by his career.
The production was a significant technical undertaking for Sony Pictures. To achieve the film's signature look, the effects team used motion control photography and green screens to place multiple versions of Sandler in the same frame. They also employed Cinema 4D and Autodesk Maya for digital graphics, while adding interlaced video effects to mimic the aesthetic of a DVD. Interestingly, the crew initially planned to freeze the entire environment during pause sequences, but found the lack of movement bothered the eye, opting instead to keep background elements like blowing leaves in motion.
Upon its June 23, 2006 release, the film was a commercial success, grossing $268.7 million worldwide against an $85 million budget. Despite mixed critical reception—with some reviewers comparing it unfavorably to It's a Wonderful Life—it resonated with audiences, earning a B+ from CinemaScore and a win for Favorite Movie Comedy at the 33rd People's Choice Awards. It also marked a milestone for home media as the first dual-layer Blu-ray disc released by Sony, cementing its place in the evolution of digital home entertainment.
