In short: Despite producing 14 consecutive top-10 singles and five top-10 albums between 1969 and 1971, Creedence Clearwater Revival was a band at war with itself. John Fogerty’s singular creative control fueled their meteoric rise, but his refusal to share authority ultimately shattered the group, leading to decades of acrimonious legal battles.

Formed in El Cerrito, California, in 1968, the band evolved from earlier iterations like the Blue Velvets and the Golliwogs. John Fogerty, his brother Tom, Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford achieved massive success with a sound that rejected the era's psychedelic trends in favor of a stripped-back, working-class approach. Their 1969 performance at Woodstock was a high-profile moment, though John Fogerty was famously dissatisfied with the band's equipment and the audience's low energy, leading him to block their inclusion in the festival's official film.

The band's internal friction centered on John Fogerty’s dominance. He acted as the primary songwriter, producer, and arranger, often leaving his bandmates feeling marginalized. By 1970, the group demanded a more democratic process, which culminated in the 1972 album Mardi Gras. Critics panned the record for its lack of cohesion, and the band officially disbanded later that year. The fallout was severe, extending to lawsuits involving Fantasy Records owner Saul Zaentz, who held the rights to the band's catalog.

The legal entanglements persisted for years, even affecting John Fogerty's solo career. He famously faced a plagiarism lawsuit from Fantasy Records for his own song, 'The Old Man Down the Road,' which the label claimed mirrored his earlier CCR hit, 'Run Through the Jungle.' Fogerty eventually returned to performing his classic CCR material in 1987, but the original members never fully reconciled. Tom Fogerty passed away in 1990, and while Cook and Clifford later toured as Creedence Clearwater Revisited, the original lineup remained permanently fractured.
