From stocking shoes to winning Eurovision with an Olympic skater
In short: Dima Bilan’s rise to stardom is a study in artistic pivot. Originally trained as a classical opera singer, he traded the prestige of the conservatory for the pop charts, eventually leading Russia to a major international victory alongside one of the world's most famous figure skaters.
Born Viktor Belan, Bilan’s journey began with formal musical training. He studied classical singing at the Gnessin Musical College between 2000 and 2003 before moving on to act at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. During his studies, he balanced his education by working late-night shifts in a shoe store. Despite his academic background in opera, Bilan grew restless with the classical curriculum, dreaming instead of a career in pop music.
His transition was facilitated by producer Yuri Aizenshpis, who recognized his potential and encouraged him to adopt the pseudonym Dima Bilan—using his grandfather's first name and surname. This shift proved lucrative; while he initially competed in domestic contests like New Wave (finishing fourth in 2002), his ballad "Na beregu neba" became a massive commercial success in 2004, earning a gold certification and establishing him as a household name in Russia.
Bilan's international breakthrough peaked in 2008 at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade. Performing "Believe," he secured first place with 272 points. The performance was notable for its unique staging: Bilan was accompanied by Hungarian violinist Edvin Marton and Russian Olympic figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko. This victory, while later questioned by Ukrainian officials, cemented his status as a major export of the Russian music scene.
His career has been defined by high-profile collaborations and diverse projects, including recording with producers like Ryan Tedder and Rudy Perez for international markets. However, his trajectory has also faced geopolitical friction; in early 2023, he became subject to sanctions from Ukraine and Canada due to his support of the 2022 Russian invasion.
