How a restless teenager named Flea became a pillar of modern rock music
In short: Born Michael Balzary, the bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers transformed from a troubled youth running Hollywood streets into a foundational figure of funk-rock. Beyond his iconic slap bass technique, his journey spans decades of personal volatility, creative evolution, and a deep, enduring commitment to musical education.
Born in Melbourne in 1962, Michael Balzary moved to New York and eventually Los Angeles, where his childhood was marked by domestic instability and violence. To navigate this environment, he turned to music, initially idolizing jazz trumpeters like Miles Davis. His transformation into the musician known as Flea began at Fairfax High School, where he met Anthony Kiedis. Their bond, forged through shared status as social outcasts, became the bedrock of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Flea’s career is defined by constant reinvention. While his early work relied on aggressive slap bass, he later pivoted toward melodic, textured compositions, particularly during the recording of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. This album, released in 1991, became a massive commercial success, moving millions of units in the United States. His creative path has also included extensive side projects, from joining Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace to collaborating with artists like Tom Waits and Alanis Morissette.
Despite the band's global success, Flea’s tenure has been punctuated by periods of intense dysfunction, drug-related tragedies—most notably the 1988 death of guitarist Hillel Slovak—and his own health struggles, including a 1993 diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. Yet, his commitment to the band remains rooted in a familial sense of loyalty to Kiedis. Outside of the spotlight, he co-founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001, a non-profit school for underprivileged youth, reflecting a desire to provide the structured musical education he once sought himself.
