Gustavo Dudamel went from El Sistema violin lessons to leading the New York Philharmonic
Gustavo Dudamel was five when he joined El Sistema, Venezuela's music programme for social change, and started on the violin. By 18 he was music director of the country's national youth orchestra, and in 2026 he became the first Latin American to take charge of the New York Philharmonic.
Born in Barquisimeto on 26 January 1981 to a trombonist father and a mother who taught singing, Dudamel entered El Sistema in 1986. Composition study followed the violin, and in 1995 he began learning to conduct, first with Rodolfo Saglimbeni and then with José Antonio Abreu. His 1999 appointment at the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra took him touring abroad, and in 2003 he assisted Simon Rattle in Berlin and Salzburg.
Winning the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Germany in 2004 made his name travel fast. Rattle and Claudio Abbado accepted invitations to conduct his Venezuelan orchestra, Gothenburg signed him as principal conductor, and in November 2006 he made his debut at La Scala with Don Giovanni. His first appearance in the United States came at the Hollywood Bowl on 13 September 2005 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which in April 2007 named him its next music director. He took up the post in 2009 and, through a string of extensions, held it until the close of the 2025–2026 season.
The podium brought some unusual jobs. At John Williams's request he conducted the opening and end titles for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, and at the 2016 Super Bowl he and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles backed Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. On 1 January 2017 he became the youngest conductor ever to lead the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Day Concert.
Not every appointment lasted. The Paris Opera made him music director from August 2021 on a six-season contract, but he resigned in 2023. New York, where he had guest-conducted since 2007 and made 26 further appearances, gave him a five-year initial contract as Music and Artistic Director.
