From street-side juice vendor to the architect of India's massive music empire
In short: Gulshan Kumar transformed a humble family cassette shop into T-Series, a dominant force in the Indian music industry. His rise from the streets of Delhi to Bollywood mogul was marked by immense commercial success and deep religious devotion, ending in a tragic assassination that shook the nation in 1997.
Born in 1956 to a fruit juice vendor in Delhi, Gulshan Kumar Dua’s path changed when his family acquired a shop selling inexpensive audio cassettes. This modest venture laid the foundation for Super Cassettes Industries, which he founded in 1983. By the 1990s, T-Series had become a titan of the Indian music market, sparking a massive industry boom. His influence extended into film production, with hits like the 1990 film Aashiqui, which remains iconic for its music by the duo Nadeem–Shravan.
Kumar’s business growth was staggering. Annual earnings for T-Series climbed from ₹20 crore in 1985 to ₹500 crore by the time of his death in 1997. Today, the company remains a powerhouse, controlling over 60% of the Indian music market and maintaining a distribution network of more than 2,500 dealers. Beyond his commercial achievements, Kumar was a devout follower of Shiva and Vaishno Devi, famously establishing a free meal service for pilgrims in 1983 that continues to operate under his son, Bhushan Kumar.
The mogul’s life ended abruptly on 12 August 1997, when he was shot 18 times outside a temple in Mumbai. The assassination was linked to an extortion attempt by the underworld organization D-Company, which had demanded ₹10 crore in protection money. While police initially accused composer Nadeem Saifi of orchestrating the hit, Abdul Rauf Merchant confessed to the murder in 2001. Rauf was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002, later fleeing and being extradited from Bangladesh in 2016. Despite the tragedy, T-Series continues to thrive, with plans announced in 2017 for a biographical film titled Mogul.
