How a Japanese composer named himself after Quincy Jones to create a global legacy
In short: Born Mamoru Fujisawa, the prolific composer Joe Hisaishi adopted his stage name as a tribute to American musician Quincy Jones. Since his 1984 partnership with Hayao Miyazaki, he has become one of the most influential figures in film scoring, blending minimalist, electronic, and orchestral traditions into a globally recognized sound.
Born in 1950 in Nakano, Japan, Mamoru Fujisawa began his musical journey at age four with the Suzuki violin method. By the time he entered the Kunitachi College of Music in 1969, he was already deeply immersed in cinema, a passion fueled by watching hundreds of films annually with his father. His early professional career in the 1970s saw him experimenting with Japanese popular music, electronic sounds, and the influence of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, eventually leading to his first album, MKWAJU, in 1981.
The turning point in his career arrived in 1983 when he was recommended to create an image album for Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. This collaboration, often compared to the partnership between Steven Spielberg and John Williams, defined his trajectory. Hisaishi has since scored almost every Miyazaki film, including My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. His work is characterized by a unique ability to bridge minimalist structures with sweeping orchestral arrangements, a style that has earned him seven Japanese Academy Awards for Best Music.
Beyond his Ghibli work, Hisaishi has maintained a diverse portfolio, scoring films for Takeshi Kitano, the Oscar-winning Departures, and even composing for video games like Ni no Kuni. His influence extends into the concert hall, where he has conducted massive ensembles, such as the 1,200-musician orchestra at the Budokan in 2008. In 2023, he signed an exclusive agreement with Deutsche Grammophon, cementing his status as a major classical and contemporary force. His legacy is now recognized globally, from sold-out performances in San Francisco and Paris to prestigious honors like the Order of the Rising Sun.
