How a mysterious London duo evolved into a globally recognized musical collective
In short: Formed in 2013 by childhood friends Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland, Jungle initially hid their identities to focus on visual aesthetics. What began as a secretive studio project has since transformed into a sprawling, organic collective known for high-concept dance videos and a sound that permeates modern media.
Jungle emerged from the creative partnership of Lloyd-Watson and McFarland, who grew up as neighbors in Shepherd's Bush and attended Latymer Upper School together. Before establishing Jungle, the pair played in a short-lived shoegaze group called Born Blonde. When they launched their new project, they intentionally obscured their faces and names, preferring to be known simply as J and T. This anonymity allowed the music’s surrounding artwork and video content to take center stage, a philosophy that remains central to their identity.
The group’s evolution from a studio-based duo to a seven-piece live act was driven by a desire for genuine human connection. Rather than relying on laptops for live performances, they sought to translate their recorded work into an organic, energetic experience. This collaborative spirit eventually expanded to include Lydia Kitto, who became a full-time member in 2023 after contributing significantly to the album Volcano. The band’s visual output is equally collaborative, frequently featuring one-shot dance sequences directed by Lloyd-Watson alongside Charlie Di Placido.
Beyond their five studio albums—ranging from their 2014 debut to 2026's Sunshine—Jungle has achieved a unique ubiquity in popular culture. Their tracks, particularly the hit "Busy Earnin'," have appeared in everything from FIFA video games and Apple events to television series like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and House of Lies. By blending a distinct sonic signature with interconnected visual narratives—such as the motion picture accompanying their fourth album—Jungle has successfully maintained a "team spirit" that resonates far beyond traditional music charts.
