In short: Before they became record-breaking pop icons, Bananarama were nearly homeless teenagers squatting in a London rehearsal space. From those humble beginnings, they evolved into a chart-topping powerhouse, securing a place in the Guinness World Records for the most chart entries by an all-female group in history.

Formed in 1980, the group originated when friends Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward relocated from Bristol to London. After meeting Siobhan Fahey, the trio found themselves in a precarious housing situation until Paul Cook provided them shelter above the former Sex Pistols rehearsal room on Denmark Street. Their name was partially inspired by a Roxy Music track, and their early years were defined by deep immersion in the punk and post-punk scenes, performing backing vocals for acts like Iggy Pop and the Jam.

Their mainstream breakthrough arrived in 1982 through a collaboration with Fun Boy Three. Throughout the 1980s, the group achieved significant international success, particularly in the United States, where they were associated with the MTV-driven Second British Invasion. Their 1986 cover of the Shocking Blue song 'Venus' reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, bolstered by a provocative music video that became an MTV staple. By 1988, the group had secured 32 singles in the UK Top 50, a testament to their enduring commercial appeal.

The group's lineup shifted over the decades, with Jacquie O'Sullivan replacing Fahey in 1988 before Dallin and Woodward continued as a duo from 1991 onward. Despite these transitions, they maintained a consistent presence in the music industry, experimenting with genres ranging from flamenco to acid house. Their legacy was cemented not just by their chart performance, but by their influence on the girl-group format, earning them recognition as one of the most successful dance acts in Billboard history.
