The Norwegian band that traded metal aggression for atmospheric rock
In short: Leprous didn't just join the progressive metal scene; they redefined its boundaries. By blending the heavy influences of Tool and King Crimson with a more rock-oriented, avant-garde sensibility, the band moved from heavy metal roots to a sophisticated sound that prioritizes intuitive composition over rigid genre rules.
Formed in 2001 by Einar Solberg and Tor Oddmund Suhrke, Leprous initially navigated a period of unstable lineups before solidifying their identity with their 2009 debut, Tall Poppy Syndrome. Early critical reception highlighted their ability to move past the 'staunchly pre-90s mentality' of many contemporary progressive metal acts. Instead, they fused the atmospheric weight of Pink Floyd and King Crimson with the alternative metal energy of bands like Tool.
The band's evolution is marked by deliberate stylistic shifts. While early records like Coal (2013) and The Congregation (2015) maintained a darker, more severe atmosphere, the 2017 release Malina signaled a significant pivot away from harsh vocals toward a more rock-oriented approach. This experimentation continued with Pitfalls (2019), which integrated art rock and pop influences, and Aphelion (2021), showcasing a commitment to taking different approaches on every studio album.
At the core of their sound is a unique collaborative mechanism: Solberg composes the musical backbone on keyboards, while Suhrke pens most of the lyrics and adapts them to the guitar. This often necessitates complex chords and varied tunings to match Solberg's keyboard progressions. Interestingly, Solberg eventually abandoned formal notation in favor of intuitive composition, a choice that reflects the band's preference for organic musicality over strict technicality.
Despite being classified as progressive metal, avant-garde metal, or alternative metal, the members refuse to affiliate with any single genre. Their instrumentation is equally fluid, featuring consistent eight-string guitars, cellos, trumpets, and a rotating cast of members who perform additional keyboards and percussion live to maintain their dynamic, multi-layered sound.
