In short: My Bloody Valentine's 1991 masterpiece Loveless was a logistical nightmare that nearly bankrupted its label. Through obsessive production, non-standard tunings, and a unique glide guitar technique, Kevin Shields created a sonic landscape so dense and innovative that it remains a landmark of the shoegaze genre three decades later.

Released in November 1991, Loveless was the result of a grueling, two-year recording process that spanned nineteen different studios. Led by guitarist Kevin Shields, the band abandoned traditional methods, opting instead for digital sampling, meticulous production, and a technique Shields called glide guitar. By manipulating the tremolo arm while strumming, he bent strings in and out of tune, creating a signature, swirling sound that many listeners mistakenly attributed to complex pedal effects.

The album's creation was marked by extreme perfectionism and conflict. Shields often worked in isolation, recording drum patterns as samples when drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig was unavailable due to health issues, and layering his own voice with Bilinda Butcher’s to create a singular, indistinct vocal texture. The production was so protracted that the band’s label, Creation Records, faced severe financial strain. Label owner Alan McGee eventually dropped the band, citing the difficulty of working with Shields, while rumors of the album's cost—estimated by some at £250,000—became legendary in the music industry.

Despite the chaos, the result was a critical triumph. Critics praised the album for its sonic innovations, with some calling it a virtual reinvention of the guitar. While it only reached number 24 on the UK Albums Chart, its influence on subsequent artists proved immense. Shields, who famously refused to release a follow-up he deemed inferior to Loveless, did not deliver another full-length album until 2013. Today, the record stands as a testament to the power of uncompromising artistic vision, even when that vision pushes everyone involved to the brink of collapse.
