How a dangerous, electric guitar prototype helped U2 create their first American number-one hit
In short: U2 nearly abandoned their iconic 1987 ballad With or Without You, struggling to find an arrangement that felt right. The breakthrough came from an experimental Infinite Guitar prototype that delivered sustained notes but risked giving the guitarist a nasty electric shock. It transformed the track into a spiritual, otherworldly masterpiece.
The song originated from a 1985 demo that the band found stagnant and overly traditional. During the recording sessions for The Joshua Tree at Danesmoate House, the group experimented with ambient textures under producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Despite these efforts, the band remained dissatisfied until Bono and his friend Gavin Friday rearranged the track. The turning point arrived when the Edge received a prototype Infinite Guitar from Canadian musician Michael Brook. This instrument allowed for infinite sustain, but its elaborate assembly was hazardous, occasionally delivering electric shocks to the Edge's technician.
The final production was a collaborative, often debated process. Eno sequenced a drum beat on a Yamaha DX7, which was then fed through a Mesa Boogie amplifier to add personality. When mixing, Eno instructed engineer Mark Wallis to route guitars through multiple effects units, creating a layered, spiritual soundscape that contrasted with the song's minimal, bass-driven beginning. Bono, who wrote the lyrics while visiting the Côte d'Azur in 1986, described the song as a reflection on the tension between his domestic life and his career as a musician. He noted that the lyrics explore the torment of repressed desires.
Upon its release in March 1987, the song became U2's first number-one single in the United States, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. While manager Paul McGuinness initially feared the song was too sonically unusual for radio, it proved to be a massive commercial success and a critical darling. The song's structure, which avoids a traditional verse-chorus form, has been praised for its sophisticated build and emotional catharsis. It remains a staple of the band's live performances, having been featured in numerous concert films and reaching one billion streams on Spotify by March 2024.
