In short: After being fired from Metallica in 1983, Dave Mustaine vowed to create a band faster and heavier than his former group. He named it Megadeth, a term he found in a political pamphlet. Over four decades, the band defined American thrash metal, navigated constant lineup shifts, and pioneered digital fan engagement.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1983, Megadeth emerged from Mustaine’s desire for vengeance following his dismissal from Metallica. Mustaine, who had helped shape Metallica’s early sound, drew inspiration for his new band’s name from a pamphlet by California senator Alan Cranston regarding the arsenal of megadeath. The band’s early years were defined by instability, with Mustaine cycling through numerous musicians before finding a consistent partner in bassist David Ellefson. Their debut, 1985’s Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!, was produced on a shoestring budget after the band spent their initial recording funds on drugs and alcohol.

The band’s trajectory shifted with 1986’s Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, which brought them into the underground metal spotlight with its socially conscious lyrics and political commentary. Despite achieving platinum status with albums like 1990’s Rust in Peace and 1992’s Countdown to Extinction, Megadeth was frequently hampered by the substance abuse issues that plagued Mustaine and his bandmates. These struggles led to numerous personnel changes, including the firing of guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson in 1987, and the eventual departure of longtime bassist David Ellefson in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Megadeth’s influence extended beyond their technical guitar work and intricate arrangements. In 1994, they launched Megadeth, Arizona, widely considered the first official artist website, which featured a virtual chat room and digital content for fans. By the time they released their final studio album in 2026, the band had secured twelve Grammy nominations and a win for the song Dystopia. Mustaine, the sole constant member throughout the band's 43-year history, announced that Megadeth would disband following the tour supporting their final record, marking the end of a career that helped define the thrash metal genre.
