How a bicycle mechanic became the legendary Emperor of Ghazal
In short: Mehdi Hassan was a master of classical music who could sing for 52 hours straight. After migrating to Pakistan with nothing, he worked as a tractor mechanic while keeping his craft alive. He eventually revolutionized ghazal singing, earning acclaim from legends like Lata Mangeshkar, who felt God spoke through him.
Born in 1927 into a family of hereditary musicians in British India, Mehdi Hassan began his formal training in Hindustani classical music at age eight. His father and uncle, both traditional dhrupad singers, instilled in him a rigorous discipline that included daily physical exercise and extended vocal practice. This regimen was so effective that Hassan later claimed it allowed him to sing continuously for up to 52 hours without losing his breath.
The 1947 partition of India forced a 20-year-old Hassan to migrate to Pakistan, where he faced severe financial hardship. He worked in a bicycle shop and later as a tractor mechanic, yet he never abandoned his musical practice. His breakthrough arrived in 1964 with the ghazal 'Gulon mein rang bharay' from the film Farangi. The rendition was so definitive that the poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz reportedly stopped reciting the poem himself, insisting that the work now belonged to Hassan.
Known as the Shahenshah-e-Ghazal, or Emperor of Ghazal, Hassan is credited with bringing this complex art form to a global audience. His unique ability to maintain the integrity of ragas while innovating melodic patterns earned him immense respect. Even Lata Mangeshkar, upon hearing him in New Delhi in 1977, famously remarked that it seemed as though God was singing through his voice. Despite suffering from chronic health issues and strokes later in life, his influence remains a cornerstone of sub-continental music.
