In short: After being ousted from Metallica in April 1983, Dave Mustaine launched a thrash metal powerhouse. Through decades of revolving musicians and intense lineup changes, Megadeth achieved massive global success, selling over 50 million albums and eventually reaching the top of the Billboard 200 charts with their 2026 release.

Megadeth's origins lie in the immediate aftermath of Dave Mustaine's departure from Metallica in April 1983. Alongside musicians like Matt Kisselstein and Dijon Carruthers, Mustaine formed the group, eventually cementing a classic lineup in late 1984 with David Ellefson, Chris Poland, and Gar Samuelson. After an initial run on the independent Combat Records, the band moved to Capitol Records following the success of their 1985 debut, Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! The early roster also featured Robbie McKinney as a guitarist. This period of growth saw the group transition from their independent roots to a major label presence by the end of 1985.

The band's history is defined by constant personnel volatility. Mustaine famously cycled through guitarists and drummers, including the influential era of Marty Friedman and Nick Menza, which produced the 1990 album Rust in Peace. While the band saw massive commercial peaks in the early 1990s—with Countdown to Extinction (1992) and Youthanasia (1994) both achieving RIAA platinum certification—they also faced periods of instability, including a temporary disbandment in 2002 following a Mustaine arm injury. The band's commercial peak included the 1997 release Cryptic Writings, which earned platinum status and featured the single 'Trust,' which reached number five on the Mainstream Rock charts. Even during periods of change, such as the 2001 era with Al Pitrelli, the group maintained a significant presence.

Despite the turbulence, the band's commercial reach expanded globally. Their hit 'Symphony of Destruction' reached the top 15 in both the UK and Ireland, and by 2023, their total worldwide sales exceeded 50 million copies. After years of various iterations, the band achieved a historic milestone on January 23, 2026, when their self-titled album, Megadeth, reached number one on the Billboard 200, marking their first chart-topping release. The group's Grammy history includes a win for Best Metal Performance for the 2016 album Dystopia. Their later discography also saw notable chart successes, such as the 2013 album Super Collider, which reached number six on the Billboard 200.
