In short: Mily Balakirev was the driving force behind the Russian nationalist school, shaping the careers of composers like Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin. Yet, his legacy is a paradox: a brilliant, dictatorial mentor whose own creative development stalled in his youth, eventually leading him to abandon music for a job as a railway clerk.

Born in 1836, Balakirev emerged as a central figure in 19th-century Russian music. He was the primary architect of 'The Five,' a group of nationalist composers that included César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, and Aleksandr Borodin. As the only professional musician among them for several years, Balakirev exerted immense influence, often imposing his own stylistic techniques and musical beliefs onto his disciples through constant, autocratic supervision of their early works.

His influence extended beyond his circle, impacting Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and setting the course for Russian orchestral and lyrical music. Balakirev was a master of gathering inspiration from folk songs and the Caucasus, which he channeled into works like the symphonic poem 'Tamara' and the virtuosic piano fantasy 'Islamey.' However, his personality was marked by tactlessness and a despotic nature that eventually alienated his friends and students. This, combined with personal and artistic struggles, triggered a severe crisis in the 1870s.

Between 1872 and 1876, Balakirev withdrew from the musical world entirely, even taking a post as a railway clerk. When he eventually returned to composition, he had become a superstitious, bigoted man. While he continued to write and conduct, his creative development had effectively arrested after 1871. His later works, such as his Second Symphony, were composed in the idiom of his youth, leaving many of his most inventive ideas trapped in unfinished manuscripts for decades. Today, he is remembered as a pivotal, if complicated, catalyst who fused traditional folk elements with classical structures.
