In short: Beyond the sweeping melodies of a symphony lies a microscopic structural unit: the motif. This tiny musical fragment acts as the DNA of a composition, capable of uniting entire movements or representing a specific character through a single, recurring rhythmic pulse.

At its most fundamental level, a motif is the smallest structural unit that possesses its own thematic identity. While definitions vary among scholars, the essence remains the same: it is a fragment of melody, rhythm, or harmony that serves as a recognizable building block. Some theorists, like the 1958 Encyclopédie Fasquelle, view it as a single cell, while others suggest it can encompass multiple cells within a larger phrase. It can even exist purely as an abstraction, such as a harmonic motif consisting of chords without melody, or a rhythmic motif stripped of pitch.

The power of the motif lies in its ability to provide unity through development. By altering, repeating, or sequencing a single figure, a composer can construct entire themes and complex pieces. A famous example is Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, which utilizes a 'fate motif'—a pattern of three short notes followed by one long note—to permeate the work through various permutations. In more specialized forms, a 'head-motif' (or Kopfmotiv) can appear at the start of a set of movements to bind them together, a technique frequently seen in cyclic masses.

The concept also extends to narrative, where a motif linked to a person or idea is known as a leitmotif or idée fixe. Some even use musical cryptograms to hide names within these fragments. However, the distinction between a motif and a mere 'figure' is a point of nuance; philosopher Roger Scruton argued that a motif occupies the musical foreground, whereas a figure acts like architectural moulding, sitting in the background as an endlessly repeatable element.
