In short: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit isn't just a precursor to Mickey Mouse; he is a map of early animation history. His filmography reveals a fractured ownership structure born from a bitter contractual dispute that divided nearly 200 cartoons between two of the world's largest media giants.

The history of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is defined by a shifting lineage of ownership and production. Between 1927 and 1938, Universal Pictures released 190 theatrical cartoons featuring the character. However, the rights to these works are not unified. Because of a contractual dispute between Walt Disney and the producer Winkler Pictures, the production of the series was fractured. Disney animated 26 of the first 27 cartoons released between 1927 and 1928. When production moved in-house, Winkler Pictures took over, producing the 25th cartoon, 'High Up,' and another 25 films between 1928 and 1929.

The narrative then shifted again to Walter Lantz, who produced the final 148 cartoons of the series. Lantz first headed Universal Cartoon Studios from 1929 to 1935 before establishing his own Walter Lantz Studio, which continued the series until 1938. This transition marks a significant era in animation history, moving from the early Disney era to the established Lantz era. Today, the ownership remains split: Disney Enterprises owns the first 27 films, while Universal Studios owns the remainder, excluding any titles that have fallen into the public domain.

This division highlights the complexities of intellectual property in the early 20th century. While Oswald is often overshadowed by Mickey Mouse, his filmography serves as a primary record of how studio politics, production moves, and legal disputes can permanently bifurcate a character's creative history. The distinction between the Disney-produced era and the Lantz-produced era remains a core component of the character's archival identity.
