In short: Before Mickey Mouse existed, Pete was already terrorizing screens. Debuting in 1925 as a bear, he evolved into a cat, a Nazi spy, and a suburban car salesman. As Disney's longest-running character, Pete has spent nearly a century shapeshifting from a menacing villain into a surprisingly versatile, recurring cultural icon.

Created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, Pete first appeared in the 1925 short Alice Solves the Puzzle. Originally an anthropomorphic bear, he was named 'Bootleg Pete'—a nod to the Prohibition-era trade of illegal alcohol. By 1928, he was redefined as a cat to serve as the primary antagonist for the newly created Mickey Mouse. His physical appearance shifted significantly over the decades; he famously sported a peg-leg in early cartoons, a trait that animators eventually abandoned because they struggled to remember which leg was artificial. In 1944, Disney briefly retired the character, partly due to concerns that his disability was being mocked.

Pete’s career is defined by an extraordinary range of roles. He has been a hardened criminal, a drill sergeant for Donald Duck, a Nazi agent in 1943, and even a sympathetic impresario. His versatility extends to his family tree and social circle, which have been expanded heavily in international comics. Italian creators introduced his long-term girlfriend Trudy and a criminal scientist cousin named Portis. In the 1992 television series Goof Troop, Pete was reimagined as a suburban used-car salesman with a wife named Peg and two children, PJ and Pistol, providing a rare glimpse into his domestic life.

Despite his reputation as a villain, Pete’s role is highly fluid. In the preschool series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, he is a friendly, mischievous neighbor rather than a threat. This adaptability has allowed him to survive across different media, from the early Alice Comedies to the 2013 short Get a Horse!. Whether he is a greedy landlord in House of Mouse or a rival in a race, Pete remains the most consistently appearing supporting character in Disney history, having even bridged the gap between rival animation studios during the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit era.
