In short: Before topping the Billboard charts, Sean Paul was a competitive swimmer and water polo player for Jamaica’s national team. He eventually traded the pool for the studio, pioneering a fusion of dancehall and pop that would go on to dominate global airwaves and earn him a Grammy Award.

Born in Kingston in 1973, Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques grew up in a family of accomplished swimmers. He represented Jamaica in water polo from age 13 until 21, when he pivoted to music. His early career began in the Kingston open mic scene, where he caught the attention of producer Jeremy Harding. Their collaboration on the track 'Infiltrate' helped build local momentum, eventually leading to his debut album, Stage One, in 2000.

Paul’s international breakthrough arrived with his second album, Dutty Rock (2002). The single 'Get Busy' became the first dancehall song to top the US Billboard Hot 100, and the album eventually sold over six million copies worldwide, winning Best Reggae Album at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. This success helped popularize the genre of dancehall pop, characterized by Paul’s ability to bridge the gap between Jamaican patois and mainstream international markets.

Throughout his career, Paul has maintained a relentless pace of collaboration, featuring on massive hits like Beyoncé’s 'Baby Boy' and Sia’s 'Cheap Thrills'. His commercial resurgence in 2016 saw him signing with Island Records and releasing 'No Lie' with Dua Lipa, which has since surpassed one billion YouTube views. Paul attributes his longevity to the inspiration of artists like Toots and the Maytals, who continued performing well into their later years.

Despite his success, Paul has been candid about the challenges faced by Jamaican artists. He has noted that the use of 'hardcore patois' can create a language barrier in US and UK markets. By navigating these cultural intersections and evolving his sound—from early dancehall roots to recent bilingual collaborations with artists like J Balvin—Paul has remained a fixture in the global music industry for over two decades.
